She was a normal girl. Like you or me.
So why do we know about this poor, young girl? We know because God chose her.
Much has been said about her and she has been revered for centuries. Mary deserves our respect and we do honor her, but let us not forget that she was God’s “favored one” not because she was better than others, but because God chose to favor her. He chose to abide with her. Yes, her response to the news brought by Gabriel was awe-inspiring, but the One who evoked this awe-inspiring response was God Himself. Apart from Him she could do nothing. There was no source of understanding, perspective, humility or holiness apart from Him.
Mary knew that God had been gracious to her in a way that she didn’t earn and didn’t deserve. God chose to make his “home” in Mary’s very body. She believed Him. She was favored.
The same is true for us. God has been gracious to us in a way that we do not deserve. He wants to make his “home” inside your very heart. He wants to offer you life. If you accept the gift, you, like Mary, will be favored.
Mary : “Oh, how my soul praises the Lord.
How my spirit rejoices in God my Savior!
For he took notice of his lowly servant girl,
and from now on all generations will call me blessed.
For the Mighty One is holy,
and he has done great things for me.
He shows mercy from generation to generation
to all who fear him.
His mighty arm has done tremendous things!
He has scattered the proud and haughty ones.
He has brought down princes from their thrones
and exalted the humble.
He has filled the hungry with good things
and sent the rich away with empty hands.
He has helped his servant Israel
and remembered to be merciful.
For he made this promise to our ancestors,
to Abraham and his children forever.”
